3. Saturday Again

stop motion animation 2024

Saturday Again is a visual poem created in Barcelona with music by Andrea Susarrey. The video aims to bring visuals to escapism, loneliness, and isolation through daydreaming and fantasy. It’s the result of using illusions and “toxic positivity” as coping mechanisms for trauma. The animation was created intuitively, holding the camera in one hand and animating with the other. The characters in the animation choose to ignore that the sky is just a blue garbage bag or that the moon they wish so badly to be magic is only a reflection of a light coming from inside the house. They never experience the real outside world but live complacently in their fantasy. In this video, the Yellow puppet begins to wonder if something is deeply wrong with the apartment.

My two favorite books as a kid, Edith and Mr. Bear by Dare Wright (1964), and The Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka (1992), inspired me. The mood of both of them is so lonely even though the characters are never alone. They both give me a feeling that something bad might happen and the characters just exist with this fact.
